Legal translation
My translation services cover the translation of legal documents from French, German and English into German or French.
The difficulty of legal translation lies both in the complexity of legal terms and in the lack of equivalent terms. As some terms and concepts in the source text are sometimes untranslatable, only an experienced professional translator specialising in legal translation will be able to use their research, writing and interpretation skills to produce a translation that is as faithful as possible to the source text and the original meaning.
My expertise, combining linguistic skills and legal expertise, has enabled me to develop extensive terminology research skills in order to find the exact term. This often involves spending a lot of time researching terminology, which requires comparing different definitions and legal concepts in order to produce the most accurate translation possible.
In addition, solid knowledge of the relevant field of law is required, as each area of law uses its own vocabulary and legal language.
For example, translating a summons in patent law, a judgment in family law or conclusions in commercial law requires specialised legal knowledge and a perfect command of the terminology of the relevant field of law.
My professional experience has enabled me to specialise in private law in general and in particular in contract law, personal injury, family law, commercial and business law, intellectual property law, as well as European and private international law. Due to my specialisation in intellectual property law, I had the opportunity in 2006/2007 and 2013/2014 to translate the second and third editions of the legal textbook ‘Saisie-Contrefaçon’ (Seizure of Counterfeit Goods) edited by P. Véron from French into German.
Thanks to my solid legal training and professional experience as a lawyer, I am also able to quickly familiarise myself with new legal principles and areas of law in detail.
However, before accepting any new translation or post-editing assignment, I will always carefully review the documents submitted to me to ensure that the tasks requested correspond to my skills.
If I find that I am unable to meet your expectations, I will endeavour to refer you to a fellow translator who specialises in the relevant field.
